Trim Sun-orchid occurs in great numbers across part of the Jan Juc cliff top grassland and is one of the great success stories of Jan Juc Coast Action's work to restore grassland ecology to the area. It grows from tubers which are dormant through the hot summer months but which begin to grow as autumn rains arrive. Fleshy, dark green, erect leaves that are ribbed on the underside and purplish at the base can grow up to 50cm in height. A purplish-coloured flower spike emerges from the leaves in spring with few to many deep purple-coloured flowers possible on one plant.
Flowering occurs from mid to late spring with seed pods in early summer.
Like all sun orchids this species relies on sunny weather; especially in the early afternoon to produce good flowering. Flowers that do not open are still capable of self-pollination.
Indigenous uses as provided by the Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation: has an edible bulb at its base.
