A rhizomatous perennial sedge typically found in locations where soils are at least partly saline and inclined to remain wetter longer. It can be seen growing between species like Coast Tussock Grass (Poa poiformis) along parts of the Jan Juc cliff top.
The most conspicuous part of the plant is the finely-held bright green stems which support the reddish-brown seedheads from spring through to autumn months.
Basal leaves occur at the base of each stem but are largely inconspicuous.
Flowerheads are produced in spikelets which are shining pale to dark brown; white anthers are conspicuous at the time of flowering.
