Paspalum is a summer growing tufted perennial grass. The leaf blades are flat to 20 centimetres long and 15 millimetres wide. The flowers are located at the end of stems with distinctive hanging green or purplish flower heads.
Originally from South America this species has been used as a pasture grass and now a ubiquitous weed of disturbed areas and lawns across the Surf Coast. Paspalum is a robust grass capable of spreading over native species, particularly in damp environments.
