Burgan
(Weed)
Kunzea ericoides

Burgan is a popular nursery plant sold at Garden Centres as an attractive Australian native shrub. Often multi-stemmed it can grow to six metres in height. Its natural distribution includes parts of south-east Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria where it grows in forest margins and openings.
Leaves are aromatic, small and narrow (linear-ovate to linear elliptic) and shortly petiolate.
Flowers are white and held in clusters on side branches or in the axils of newer growth.
It is regarded as an environmental weed in the ACT and Tasmania as well as in Victoria where it is spreading outside its natural range. It has also naturalised overseas on several Hawaiian islands.

Along the Jan Juc coastline it carries the potential to be a major threat to all coastal clifftop vegetation; especially Coastal Heathland which appears to be particularly vulnerable. It has been recorded invading low-growing coastal heath near Bells. Left unchecked it forms a dense, tall, closed canopy monoculture.
This species can be difficult to tell apart from indigenous species due to shared leaf characteristics, particularly when it is still a small plant. Therefore, it is advisable to contact the land manager before removing.
