Along our coast Austral Indigo is confined to sheltered gullies and woodland areas such as the Ironbark Basin where it receives protection from full sun. It is a fast growing, open and spreading shrub up to 2m in height.
Leaf arrangement is compound with with several leaflets, odd pinnate, bluish-green, entire and a small notch at the apex.
Flowering occurs from early spring with sprays of mauve and occasionally pink, pea-shaped flowers held on long flower spikes (racemes).
Long, cylindrically shaped seed pods appear after flowering. This species can be relatively short-lived and may survive in the landscape over long periods of time as soil-stored seed until the next fire event.
The species name australis means southern.
